  ▶ 악안면 성형외과 (Oral and Maxillofacial Plastic Surgery)란?
  
  악안면(턱과 얼굴) 영역에 대한 선천적 기형 또는 종양이나 외상에 의한 후천적 기관 결손 및 추형을 기능적으로 수복하고 형태적으로 재건함으로써 정상적이며 보다 심미적인 상태로 사회로의 복귀를 가능하게 하도록 하는 치과학의 한 분야이다.
악안면 성형외과는1950년대에 육군병원 구강악안면 외과에서 한국전쟁 중에 발생한 악안면 전상 환자에게 피부이식, 골이식 등 악안면 성형을 해 줌으로서 시작되었다. 그후 서울대학교 구강악안면외과 교수로 30년간 재직하셨던 민병일 명예교수는 1959년 국내에서는 처음으로 주걱턱 성형수술의 치험례를 대한 치과의사협회 정기학술대회에서 발표하기도하였다.

1962년 구강악안면외과의사들이 중심이 되어 대한악안면성형외과학회를 창립하게 되었고, 그 후 교통 사고나 주먹 싸움에 의한 악안면골 골절 (턱뼈 부러짐), 언청이, 안면 기형, 주걱턱, 구강암, 낭종(물주머니),치아 임프란트 등에 관한 수술과 연구를 계속 시행하여 임상적, 학술적으로 많은 발전을 이룩해 왔다.

 
     
  ▶ 구강악안면외과에 대하여  
  치의학은 구강, 악안면(턱 얼굴) 영역 및 그 주위 구조의 질병, 장애, 상태에 대하여 이것들이 신체 전반에 미치는 영향에 대해 고려하면서 평가, 예방, 치료하는 학문입니다.
의과 임상에 내과, 소아과, 산부인과, 여러 외과 등의 전문 분야가 있듯이 치과 임상에도, 구강악안면외과, 구강내과, 소아치과, 교정과, 보철과, 등 10개의 전문 임상과가 있습니다.

구강악안면외과학은 머리, 얼굴, 입, 치아, 잇몸, 턱뼈, 목의 기능적 및 심미적 문제를 포함한 질병, 신체 손상, 기형을 진단하고 외과적으로 치료하는 치과 임상의 한 전문분야입니다.

구강악안면외과에서는 구강(입속) 및 악안면부(턱, 얼굴)의 질환, 기형, 손상 등을 기능적, 심미적으로 치료합니다. 주걱턱 고치는 악교정 수술, 선천성 또는 후천적으로 발생한 비정상적 얼굴 모양을 고치는 안면 기형 성형술, 광대뼈 축소술, 하악각 절제술, 선천적으로 입술 및 입천장이 갈라진 언청이에 대한 수술, 최근 각광 받고있는 인공치아매식술, 외상에 의한 안면골 골절에 대한 처치, 레이저 수술, 사랑니 발치, 잇몸 웃음 교정술, 구강암 수술, 턱관절 질환에 대한 처치 등이 그 예입니다.		  
     
  ▶ What is oral and maxillofacial surgery(OMFS)?  
  OMFS is the specialty of dentistry that includes the diagnosis, surgical, and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries and defects, including both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissue of the oral and maxillofacial region. What this really means is that we deal with the diagnosis and management of problems from the upper part of the neck up to the orbits excluding the nasopharynx and larynx which are the province of the ENT surgeons. In this area, we do overlap with many other medical specialties including general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, otorhinolaryngology and ophthalmology. We are one of the some recognized specialties of dentistry (the others are orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, oral medicine and oral pathology, etc). Much of our work is carried out in hospitals alongside other medical specialties, but some OMF surgeons haves been practising in their own private clinic.
M oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic is the first that started as a private omfs clinic in Korea.

What are our areas of expertise?

● The diagnosis and the surgical management of acquired and developmental dentofacial deformities leading to malocclusions.

● The diagnosis and care of patients with facial and dentoalveolar infections.

● Evaluation and management of patients suffering from maxillofacial trauma.

● The diagnosis and management of patients suffering from temporomandibular joint disorders.

● The diagnosis and management of oral pathological lesions including oral cancer.

● The diagnosis and management of secondary cleft lip and palate deformities.

● The diagnosis and management of salivary gland disorders.

● The provision of maxillofacial cosmetic surgical procedures.

● The provision of dental and maxillofacial implants for securing a variety of dental and maxillofacial prosthesis.

● The diagnosis and management of dentoalveolar pathology including impacted and malpositioned teeth.

● Surgical reconstruction following hard or soft tissue loss from trauma, infection or pathology.

● Ambulatory anesthesia for surgical and other dental procedures.
